I receive phone calls every day from people who are inquiring about available positions. In itself, this is not a problem and is very common.
What is a problem is when I learn that someone is calling on behalf of their child. Seriously, folks. Do you see the issue here? Do you really expect me to interview someone whose Mommy had to call us? I can't think of one good reason why this should be happening.

JR, here's a reason. Granted, it's not a good reason, but it's a reason: The parents are so DESPERATE to get their kid a job so they can look forward to him/her moving out!

Jenny, it's actually a symptom of the Gen Y's. We run into issues like this all the time when hiring them and there have been lots of articles about it. Basically, their parents have always done everything for them; homework, class projects, etc, and it continues into "adulthood" with them applying for jobs and creating their resumes for them. It's freakin' annoying.
over the summer i had a class with a woman whose spouse was the head of hiring for our local branch of lockheed martin. she said that he was upset b/c of the newest crop of recently graduated engineers they'd interviewed. most of them had their parents call to negotiate salary and benefits packages after the interview. His response was to do another round of interviews with different candidates in hopes that someone would be ready for an adult job.
I would never dream of having my parents call or calling for my child's job negotiations. if they need me to do that for them, then i'll never be rid of them because apparently i didn't teach them anything. it's not just annoying as Beann said, it's just sad.

I had a guy's wife send in his resume for a senior programmer position a couple of weeks ago. She even called me to follow up on it.
Needless to say, I didn't interview him.
