Goodnight, Gracie, and Goodbye

My precious Gracie kitty passed away this morning. She died in my arms. I loved Gracie dearly...I still do and will forever.

It had been a terrible past 10 days for her. She had a host of compounding health issues during this time with a very grim prognosis and a painful future. So, while I am grieved beyond anything I can truly relate, I also am choosing to actively remember all the gifts she gave me in the 7 years I called her mine.

Gracie taught me love and patience.
Gracie listened to me when I talked, and talked to me in return.
Gracie reminded me that keeping the apartment clean is important (especially the litter box).
Gracie showed me the excitement of a great catnip toy, the pleasure of a good belly rub, and the bliss of a kitty brushing.
Gracie knew that a comfy place to nap is a top priority, and that ice cream is a delicious treat.
Gracie was a sweet, pretty, good girl, and I will miss her.

I love you, Gracie.

Resp,

I am very sorry for your loss, and I can only hope time makes it better. My fav pic of gracie is in your chair, as my lily is always sleeping in my chair. it must be a cat thing. i am happy you got to love her and were there for her in the end.

I am so very sorry Res. It doesn't seem at all fair that you only had seven years with her, but I suppose some of the best friends we ever had weren't for all that long.

Having been there, I know at least some of what you are going through. I am so glad that you put her potential pain and her quality of life before your own loss. There are a lot of people who aren't that unselfish.

Go ahead and grieve however you need to and for as long as you need to. There will come a day, when she enters your mind and the thoughts are more often happy ones that sad ones.

I hope she looks up John Morgan, I can just imagine the two of them trashing us behind our backs.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Losing a loved pet is so hard, but you gave her a happy life and there are so many more animals out there that will need you to provide them a home in the future when you are ready. Maybe my puppy Oliver is chasing her around pet heaven now. - blu

I got a voicemail from the specialist today. My vet had set up an appointment for this specialist because Gracie's diagnosis was somewhat of a mystery.

Without going into too many details of all Gracie's health problems lately, and all the treatments we tried, I was given enough information to make my decision of yesterday morning.

The message on my cell phone has provided me with some comfort that I did the right thing. Gracie's test results revealed she had lymphoma (cancer) in her liver and kidneys and most likely in her bone marrow. The prognosis would have been very grim, and the treatments very uncomfortable/painful with a sorry quality of life...a life that would only have lasted mere weeks, maybe a few months.

The pathologist who read the slides apparently told the vet specialist this was the most aggressive form of lymphoma she had seen. And that would explain why Gracie suddenly nosedived. I knew she was getting slower and a bit less playful the past few weeks, but she was a senior kitty (somewhere between 13 and 15 years old), and slowing down is just a part of getting older.

Anyway, thank you to all of you for writing such nice things. I was completely devastated yesterday and cried all day long, but today I'm doing much much better.

There absolutely cannot be a heaven without all of our cats there.

You were sooooo lucky to have one another.

Blessings on her, and love to you.
